Migration Diaries: Stories Written in Waiting
Film Screening & Discussion
Event Description
Lagrange Points hosts a screening of the documentary “Migration Diaries: Stories Written in Waiting”, directed by Egyptian filmmaker Mahmoud Elenani and produced by Path 14, an independent documentary platform committed to challenging distorted narratives around migration.
Set in the Netherlands during a moment of political upheaval and rising right-wing rhetoric, the film follows five asylum seekers whose lives are suspended in prolonged waiting as they anticipate life-defining decisions from the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
An Egyptian activist, a Syrian couple, an Iranian activist, and a Russian mother share their personal reflections on life shaped by uncertainty. Their testimonies reveal the emotional weight of waiting: days filled with fear and fragile hope, nights marked by anxiety and recurring nightmares, and the constant effort to maintain dignity and resilience while the future remains unresolved.
By weaving together personal narratives with the broader political context in the Netherlands, the film addresses the growing anti-migrant rhetoric that blames migrants for social and economic crises, particularly around housing and security. Rather than reproducing these narratives, Migration Diaries grounds the conversation in lived experience.
The documentary also features Dutch activist Martine Doppen, who reflects on structural racism, the polarization of public debate, and the rise of right-wing political forces in recent years.
Produced by Path 14, the film combines intimate storytelling with political reflection, offering both a human portrait of life in waiting and a broader examination of migration narratives in contemporary Europe.

Discussion
The screening will be followed by a public discussion with the filmmaker Mahmoud Elenani, together with invited guests.
The conversation will open space to reflect on the political and human questions raised by the film, including migration narratives in Europe, the experience of waiting within asylum systems, and the role of documentary cinema in challenging dominant representations.
Additional speakers will be announced soon.
